India’s relatively young democracy must understand the build-up, compulsions, and unfiltered actions of its Armed Forces in moments of extreme tribulations, stripped of any partisan or vested agenda. Soldiers like Col Ranbir, VrC, have earned that right, duty, and responsibility to tell their tale as responsible patriots. I commend this book to all interested as a very significant contribution towards the literature on a momentous event that reshaped the destiny of the subcontinent. Nine the Special Forces (Paperback)

699 INR
This work is by someone who has had the privilege of serving for more than a decade in the oldest Parachute (later Special Forces) unit of the Indian Army. His other assignments during the service took him to places and desks from where he remained very closely associated with the evolution of the parachute battalions into Special Forces ones. Written by someone who has done some hardcore foot soldiering in an SF unit and who has also had an interrelated exposure at a macro level of conceptualisation and perspective planning, this work takes its readers on a unique journey. NINE runs in his blood and the esprit de corps is hard to miss. This book tells us what it takes to be an SF soldier and what soldierly bonding is all about. An unputdownable piece of work for those who like to read about unknown aspects of an SF soldier’s life.

And the Valley Remained Silent

And the Valley Remained Silent

499 INR
This work probes the circumstances surrounding the ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide of Kashmiri Hindus⸺ the torchbearers of Valley’s ancient culture. All the typical stages of genocide from classification of the victims to the denial of culpability are clearly visible in the narrative. Real-life incidents bring to light the discrimination this educated community faced in the Valley, the dire circumstances under which they had to flee their motherland and their dogged determination to once again rebuild their lives. These aboriginals chose to abandon their homes, but not their faith. They not only survived this calamity but also thrived, and that is an inspiration for all the persecuted people. The fact that not even one act of violent revenge can be ascribed to Kashmiri Hindus, speaks volumes about their ethos.

This book offers a simplistic explanation of articles, faith, history, culture, tourism in Ladakh. Any first-time visitor to Ladakh is bound to get mystified by many strange looking objects, some unusual rituals and of course a very harsh climate. This book will help such travellers to understand Ladakh better and prepare them for what lies ahead. Then there are things of beauty that will dazzle anyone. A simple introduction into such issues like landscape, art and craft, social structure and so on has been offered for the travellers who travel out of love for the place rather than for running away from their busy lives. The core issue remains Buddhist Ladakh. Authors:- This team of TWO consists of a Ladakhi man who is a scholar and has many published works to his credit. The other one is a traveller, writer and a die-hard Ladakh addict. The work is, thus, an output of two minds- one insider and other from outside. The mix has a healthy tone to it and a traveller would identify with the explanations easily.

This book is the first of the series by the same title (but different sub-titles) that aims to bring to fore certain anecdotes and experiences as narrated by those who were there and who witnessed such events unfolding in front of their own eyes during Indo-Pak War 1971. That is the closest one can get to the truth of a battlefield engagement. Have we been able to achieve 100% accuracy? We can’t say! But we are sanguine that all such accounts are as close to the truth as possible. The contributors, all in senior age brackets by now, are free from the limitations that get imposed both by the service regulations and impact of events that may have happened in the recent past. They are well beyond such inducements. This book is the first one in the series of four books on the stories from 1971 war.

Though we have started moving towards Theaterisation, these writings have nothing to do with it; it’s just the continuation of the pre-NDA dream of joining the Navy. A long time back, I read somewhere that at a newly formed Tri-Services Establishment, orders were passed that all buildings would be secured by 1600h. Each Service reacted in its own way. The Naval chaps locked all the almirahs, closed all the windows, locked all the rooms and finally, the main doors of all the buildings under their charge. Thereafter all of them left for their barracks/family quarters at 1600h. The Army chaps ensured that proper Guards were deployed around all the buildings under their charge, and no one was permitted thereafter to enter the buildings without a proper pass. The Air Force chaps ensured that fire alarms etc. were in place in all the buildings under their charge and also ensured that everything inside had full insurance cover!

This work aims to focus primarily on the operations undertaken in the general area bound by Rajouri in the South to Haji Pir Pass in the North to Jhelum River in the West to mighty Pir Panjal in the East with its centre around Poonch. In the present context, the geographical segment being addressed actually covers the whole of Poonch District with a spill over into Northern part of Rajouri District and some areas now under illegal occupation of Pakistan (PoJK or Pakistan illegally occupied J&K). In order to keep readers in sync with the events happening in other sectors of the erstwhile Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) State, suitable mentions have been made without digging too deep into such actions. Within the Jammu region, details of the events surrounding Naushera-Jhangar, Kathua-Samba and even Jammu have been mentioned in passing so as not to lose the focus or widen the scope. Similarly, brief references have been made of the events happening North of Pir Panjal Range.

For everyone else she is either a trophy to be used at glamorous patriotic events or a money minting machine in the name of a trust or an NGO. And she is soon forgotten. Her pain, her trauma, her problems are no one’s business. It’s her battle and her battle alone. A battle she must win, for herself, for her children and for the supreme sacrifice of her husband. "A Hundred Years" Probably the 'blows' part was taken literally from his oft-quoted speech regarding "the first few blows on the anvil of life which shaped human destiny...."; and ever since then, we have been at the receiving end of blows! "No Woman No Cry" Well, actually Woman is definitely more than a Man, as she has the "Man" within her; in other words, those of us who are not Mathematically challenged would sum up that Man is actually a sub-set of Woman. "Mosquito Menace", Man proposes, and the mosquito disposes, and with disdain. Like a kamikaze, he just approaches his target; he even warns the victim of his intent with his gentle humming that here I am, 'catch me if you can'! "Casus Belli" This motherly affection which is centred on the stomach, is a universal phenomenon across the length and breadth of the country and knows no caste, religion, region, culture or language barriers. Whether we have a Uniform Civil Code or not, we have a Uniform Feeding Code for Mother India. "Ripped Jeans" Somewhere down the line, these tatters became a fashion statement; the beggars in India can now have their own line of prêt a porter (ready to wear) and can proudly boast of their high-end attire while serenading on their daily promenades on the streets' walking the ramp' rather than 'street walking'. "Tool Kits" Hack saws and chisels are languishing in the carpenter's bag as even 'hacking' these days is associated with these cyber warriors, gradually chiselling away at their domain. In fact, the domain has already been usurped by the good-for-nothing DNS, which at one time was supposed to be the job of the tool kit of an ENT surgeon's scalpel. To have the good fortune to be an active participant in an epoch-making event like the liberation of Bangladesh is an honour and privilege not shared by many. The good fortune to survive and live to record and tell the tale is the privilege of only a minuscule minority. This work comes from the desk of one such participant who saw it unfolding in front of his own eyes. Decorated for his gallantry, the author was one of the Company Commanders of 4 GUARDS (1 RAJPUT) that was tasked to cross the mighty Meghna River and charge towards Dacca. The author had the privilege of flying in the very first helicopter that crossed Meghna on the fateful evening of 09 December 1971. This is the first-hand story of one of the most audacious operations undertaken in the history of military aviation. The success of this very operation enabled the Indian Army to achieve that, incidentally, had not been planned in the first place. This is a treasure trove of some very rare and unique first-hand accounts from the senior-most officer in the Corps area of operations to the cutting edge subunit commanders. There is no parallel work of this nature in existence as on date.

This book, as a part of a series of literary works that, together cover the whole expanse of the 1947-48 conflict, focuses primarily on the Kishanganga (also referred to as Kishenganga) Valley (and Northern Kashmir as a stepping stone to the said vale). As the readers would know and realise, the bow-shaped river basin of Kishanganga (KG) River provided depth and a huge geographical cushion to the Kashmir Valley during those fateful days. If we were, hypothetically, to take out Kishanganga Valley from the map for a while, the vulnerability of Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region would stand out, needing no further aggrandizement. The KG valley with steep gorges, fast-flowing streams and the KG River, was a tough terrain to evict the well-entrenched enemy from, i.e., after the presence of such elements had been discovered or reported many months after the commencement of the conflict. Post recapture, the extended frontages that the defenders then had to hold against a numerically superior, well-supplied enemy, turned out to be a tactician’s nightmare. When we factor in the realities like lack of an air strip, lack of motorable roads and highly erratic supply lines, the challenges that Indian forces faced in the KG Valley, become apparent. It was, definitely, not a mean task to first throw the invaders out of the river basin and then hold the long stretch of the formidable mountainous terrain with just a handful of troops. As a result, many stretches were re-occupied by the enemy even after Indian troops had evicted them from such areas during the course of the conflict. The KG Valley, incidentally, sat in the middle of two secret plans, Operation Gulmarg (Kashmir and Jammu region) and Operation Datta Khel (Gilgit area), being put into action by Pakistan at that time. And unlike elsewhere, regular troops faced Indian troops from the very beginning of operations in and around the Tithwal area.

COMMANDOS. Those elite troops for whom nothing is impossible. A special breed of soldiers who walk dangerously and believe that “Who Dares, Wins”. Real-life action heroes who plunge into situations normally confined to celluloid. It is these men who form the cutting edge of real-life war games. Men whom Winston Churchill once described as “mad, quite mad...(but) in war there is often a place for mad people who bring glory at all costs.” This action-packed book tells the story of Special Forces worldwide and examines these forces. How are they organised, trained and equipped? What are the tasks they carry out in combat? How do they operate in the battlefield? What is their role in countering terrorism? What will be their role in the context of future warfare? Tracing the history of raids and rescue missions from the raid on Somnath Temple by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 to those of Shivaji on the Mughals in 1663, it goes on to describe the rescue of Mussolini from Italy, Israeli hostages from Entebbe Airport and killing of Osama. Detailed descriptions and analysis of Second World War raids as well as the Indian Army commando action against the terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir and Mumbai demonstrate the daring of the men who constitute the Special Forces today. With these modern-day Otto Skorzenys and David Stirlings at large, no citadel is secure enough, no army safe from penetration. Terrorism looms large as a major threat today to free societies of the world. It is a cheaper method of waging a war. The only way the world can cope effectively with this threat is by cooperating internationally against it. Illustrated throughout, The Killer Instinct is a highly readable account of past raids and rescues, terrorism and the face of war in the new millennium.

India-ji: My Land of Birth by Aline Dobbie

From the desk of the Author: My families have for four generations lived, served, worked, loved and been born in India. Ancestors served with great distinction. I am the very last of them. Now I sit at my desk and think back to last year’s two months in India journeying through four states, or the previous year’s experiences, or the year before. We have had the good fortune to return to India for varying lengths of time and each occasion provided a wealth of experiences – mostly good – sometimes challenging! This last 20 years of travelling has encompassed the length and breadth of India to its very tip. There is always something that has not yet been seen, or returned to, new places or restored places - and sadly some places that were better left in the distant past. Generally, however India repays close inspection and the approach must always be cup half full. Then, undoubtedly in some strange way, the cup will fill up with rich experiences, beautiful memories and interactions. The people are so important, be they professionals, hospitality providers, drivers of cars, hospitality staff, shopkeepers, connections and new friends plus, of course always, the old dependable friends. In this book I shall endeavour to put before the reader my experiences during the last twelve years of my travels - that is since my last book was published in 2008. There is a short book called Quicklook at India which came out in 2010 and was updated in 2012 but that is for business people who need to absorb the essentials of this great, ancient yet modern land in a quick efficient way - I am assured that 25,000 words can be read in one hundred minutes! This book India-ji, is about places, peoples, animals, birdlife, butterflies, flora, holy rivers, valleys, jungles, great heritage and architectural sites and cities, temples, palaces, forts, havelis, beaches, backwaters, mangroves, mountains and semi deserts which I will invite others to experience for themselves. Ji is the honorific used in India to signify respect and courtesy when addressing a person or writing to them or indeed, about them. Thus, I am writing about the country India-ji.

From “Kashmir is J&K” to “Maqbool Sherwani saved Kashmir,” “Dogras committed atrocities on Kashmiris,” “The Instrument of Accession was never signed” to “Kashmiris are different and deserve a special treatment,” a number of narratives—both false and make-believe—have been occupying the centre-stage of political and academic discourses about J&K for many decades. This work intends to take a deliberate look at some of the narratives that are related to the most vital period of our history and continue to influence hearts and minds of people of J&K as also many an observer watching from far even today. This book may help those who have been swallowed by certain narratives floating around in our premier educational institutes across the country, to find the proverbial straw that can help them come out of the abyss. It is hoped that the readers who make an effort to go through the book, will have reasons to change their minds about the issues contained herein; the change, if at all however, is expected to be purely on the merit of the argument being presented in this book.
